In a recent article for Forbes, Covisum President, Joe Elsasser, CFP®, highlighted the benefits of choosing a planning-oriented advisor who will encourage you to make smarter financial decisions.
Planning-oriented advisors are particularly adept at seeing the big picture. They ask their clients the tough questions to help them see the impact of every financial decision and how those decisions impact long-term financial goals.
"Advisors have the ability to think about the long-term implications of their clients’ financial decisions and show them how to view their financial goals through that lens."
You can determine if you've found an advisor who considers the whole picture by asking if the advisor has a structured process in place to determine if you're likely to meet your goals. You should also ask about common ways the advisor might recommend to help get you back on track if your goal are at risk.
